Alternative Payment Model Basics

Module Materials

What are Alternative Payment Models and how do they impact primary care practices?

Alternative payments models (APM) and value-based payments (VBP) are terms that are used interchangeably and refer to a variety of payment types and are best defined for what they are not: open-ended fee-for-service payments, or straight pay for volume. This module will define and describe APM/VBP, discuss the differences between these payment models and fee-for-service, and implications for primary care practices.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define value as it relates to healthcare in the U.S.
  • Describe the continuum of healthcare payment models.
  • Define value-based payments and implications for primary care practices.
