Opioid Use in the Perinatal Period: What Primary Care Practices Need to Know

Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) continues to be a major medical concern for patients and providers in the outpatient setting, including opioid use in the perinatal period. This module will review Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) including best practices for treatment initiation with a partial agonist in the outpatient settings. Discussion will include the mechanism of action of buprenorphine, risks/benefits in the perinatal period, review of effectiveness, and limitations of Buprenorphine treatment. This module will also review medications to support withdrawal symptoms with targeted prescribing.

Learning Objectives

After completing this module, the learner will be able to:

1. Describe the screening, evaluation, and diagnosis of Opioid Use Disorder (OUD).
2. Discuss the pros and cons of various evidence based treatments with a focus on outpatient buprenorphine prescribing and the indications for different induction dosings.
3. Improve patient centered care with understanding and use of supportive language, practices, and supportive medications.
4. Review updates to Colorado law that are pertinent to MOUD and best practices.
