Module 5: Perinatal Oral Health

Module Materials

This module gives an overview of how to address the oral health of pregnant people/patients in the context of perinatal visits. Participants will learn how to apply the five oral health core clinical competencies for pregnant people. As part of this module, you will be introduced to the importance of oral health for pregnant people and communication and education strategies specific to pregnant people. At the end of the module, you will complete a brief practice activity and a post-module quiz and can explore additional evidence and oral health resources.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the rationale for addressing oral health in pregnant people.
  • Describe and identify periodontal disease and its relationship to systemic health.
  • Implement the five oral health core clinical competency domains in relation to pregnant people.
  • Address interprofessional collaboration specific to the prenatal population, especially dental referral.
