Value-Based Payment Basics

Module Materials

What are Value-Based Payments and how do they impact primary care practices?

Alternative payments models (APM) and value-based payments (VBP) are terms that are used interchangeably, although there are some slight differences, and refer to a variety of payment types outside of fee-for-service. They are best defined as payment models that reward health care providers for delivering high-quality and coordinated care. This module will define and describe APM/VBP, discuss the differences between these payment models and fee-for-service, and implications for primary care practices.

  • Describe the continuum of healthcare payment models.
